Jury To Overlay Sixty-Six Miles Of Parish Roads This Summer

The Claiborne Parish Police Jury began overlaying parish roads on June 12. Road Superintendent Dean Busby said the sixty-six miles in this year's blacktop program make up about nine percent of the 725 miles in the parish road system, for a total material cost of $800,879.

Haynesville Imposes Tax On Insurance Premiums, Reviews Budget

Following the second reading of Ordinance # 562, the Haynesville Town Council voted unanimously to adopt the ordinance which provides for a tax on insurance premiums and repeals any conflicting ordinances. The Ordinance states that insurers of life, accident, and health insurance will pay $10 on gross annual premiums up to $2,000 and $70 on each additional $10,000, with a maximum license of $21,000 on each business.

Balanced Literacy Initiatives Teach The Child, Not The Text

No one knew much about Balanced Literacy several years ago. Today it is the buzz word at Homer Elementary. Two first grade teachers, Janice Givens and Kim Baker, saw remarkable results last year after using the "balanced literacy" approach in their classrooms. Of the 46 students in their classes, only one child failed to meet standards set by the Developmental Reading Assessment (DRA), but that child did show considerable improvement.

  • Donations Sought For July 4th Fireworks Display - The Homer Lions Club is seeking donations for the annual Independence Day fireworks display on Lake Claiborne scheduled for Tuesday, July 4 at a cost of $6,000. Joey White, chairman of the fund-raising effort, urges everyone to send their donations to the Homer Lions Club Fireworks Display, P. O. Box 215, Homer, LA 71040 and note "fireworks" on your check.
     
  • Free Skin Cancer Screening At Lemlo Clinic June 30 - The Lemlo Clinic at 1953 East Main in Haynesville will hold a "free skin cancer screening" from 9 AM to 1 PM on Friday, June 30.
     
  • Allen Nipper Is Looking For "Men With Beards" - In conjunction with Homer's Sesquicentennial, Beard Contest Chairman Allen Nipper is looking for entrants in a "Beard Growing Contest" beginning with a "Shave Off" on the Courthouse Square Saturday, August 5. Awards will be given to longest beard from scratch, longest beard, best looking beard on an elected official, and best looking beard in 1850 costume.   • Absentee Voting July 5-8, To Draw Commissioners Friday - Registrar of Voters Patricia Sanders said the Board of Election Commissioners will meet Friday, June 23 at 10 AM in the Registrar's office, 518 East Main, to draw commissioners and alternates for the July 15 election.   • Swimming Lessons Start July 3 At Homer Natatorium - Certified lifeguards will offer swimming lessons at the Homer Natatorium from July 3-14 for children ages 1 to 4 from 10--11 AM, and for ages 5 and up from 11 AM till noon. Pools will close July 4th. Cost for lessons is $25 per child. Mayfield Pool Swim Camp dates have not been set. Homer Natatorium pool hours are 12:30-5:30 PM, Monday through Saturday and 12:30-7:30 PM on Tuesdays. Mayfield pool hours are 2-7 PM Monday through Friday and 12 Noon-7 PM on Saturday. Admission is $1.25 per day, $10 for 10-day pass, or $35 for season pass.

  • Pupil Progression Plan Available For Public Review - The Claiborne Parish School Board will revise and adopt the Pupil Progression Plan at its regular meeting July 13, 2000. This plan sets local policy for promotion, retention, and testing of students in Claiborne Parish schools. Local residents may view the draft plan and make comments at the Claiborne Parish School Board office at 415 East Main during regular business hours.
     
  • June 30 Deadline To Sign Up For "Taste Of Homer" Recipe - Individuals, businesses, restaurants, or churches interested in preparing a favorite dish for the "Taste Of Homer" on Saturday, November 11 during Homer's Sesquicentennial Celebration should sign up immediately and submit their recipe no later than June 30. A cookbook containing these recipes, along with historical information and pictures of historical sites in and around Homer, will be sold this fall.   • June 30 Is Deadline For Homer High Class Of 1990 Reunion - The Homer High Class of 1990 will hold their 10-year reunion July 28 - 30, beginning at 6 PM Friday, July 28 with a "Get Reacquainted" at the Linder Motor Lodge. A family-oriented picnic will be held from 11 AM - 3 PM at the Lake Claiborne State Park, followed by a party at Homer City Hall from 6 PM to midnight, then conclude Sunday morning, July 30, at St. John Baptist Church.   • Hunter Education Classes Set For July And August - Hunter Education classes are scheduled for July 13, 14, and 15 and for August 9, 10, and 12 at the Homer Fire Station, according to Deputy Ken Bailey, hunter training officer. July classes will be held from 6 to 9:30 PM. August classes will be from 8 AM till noon. Pre-registration is required as classes are limited to 30 persons per class.
