His wife Bonnie is the Associate Professor of Education. This fall, they both took unpaid leaves of absence to take teaching jobs at Homer Elementary School. |
Jurors Remember Ed Foster, Declare Emergency On Jail Fire Alarm System

At the June 8 meeting of the Claiborne Parish Police Jury, Gene Coleman made a motion, which was unanimously seconded, to adopt a resolution stating jurors were "deeply saddened by the untimely death of Ed Foster" and "formally and officially recognized Foster's many unselfish contributions as an elected official of Claiborne Parish, as well as a citizen and friend." |
CPSB Adopts Revised Budget, Adds Classroom At Summerfield

The Claiborne Parish School Board adopted the revised budget for 1999-2000 school year at their regular meeting on June 8, showing a considerable surplus in the general fund. Superintendent Gary Jones said these were not recurring revenues and could not be used for teacher pay raises. Some of the surplus funds would be used for purchasing instructional materials, such as Direct Instruction, or other programs which have proven to be effective in other states. |

- Claiborne Council On Aging - Events for June 2000
- Juneteenth Celebration Set To Begin Friday, June 16
- Juneteenth festivities are set to begin Friday, June 16 with a Pageant and Talent Show from 6:30-8:30 PM, followed by an Adult Ball from 9 PM till midnight at Homer City Hall. On Saturday, June 17 parade line-up will begin promptly at 9 AM in Buck Bottom.
Festivities will continue at Mayfield Park at 11 AM with lots of food, interactive games for the kids, such as Bounce House, Wind Tunnel, and Basketball Jam, as well as softball, basketball, and live music. For more information, call Naomi Levingston at 927-3600 or Willie Curry at 927-9043.
- American Cancer Society To Form Support Group Today
- The American Cancer Society (ACS) will hold an organizational meeting on Thursday, June 15 at 5 PM at Grace Bible Church to organize a cancer support group n Claiborne Parish. - Hunter Education Classes Set For July And August
- Hunter Education classes are scheduled for July 13, 14, and 15 and for August 9, 10, and 12 at the Homer Fire Station, according to Deputy Ken Bailey, hunter training officer.
July classes will be held from 6 to 9:30 PM. August classes will be from 8 AM till noon. Pre-registration is required as classes are limited to 30 persons per class. Participants must be at least ten years old. To register, call the Claiborne Parish Sheriff's Office at 927-2011.
- Absentee Voting July 5-8, Office To Close July 3 and 4
- According to Registrar of Voters Patricia Sanders, absentee voting will be held Wednesday, July 5 through Saturday, July 8. The Registrar of Voters office, temporarily located at 518 East Main beside the Claiborne Parish Clerk of Court, will be open 8:30 AM - 4:30 PM everyday. - Donations Being Collected For Bailey Family
- Fire totally destroyed the home of Roger and Debra Bailey in the Colquitt Community near Haynesville Wednesday, May 24. Donations to help the family can be made at any First Guaranty Bank location.
- Claiborne Parish Police Jury Offers $500 Reward
- In order to alleviate littering and illegal dumping of trash on rural parish roads, the Claiborne Parish Police Jury is offering a $500 reward to anyone offering information which leads to the prosecution of someone dumping illegally or littering parish roads within Claiborne Parish. - Country, Bluegrass, Gospel Every Friday In Homer
- Every Friday night in downtown Homer, amateur musicians from all over the Ark-La-Tex meet at the Homer Fire Station to enjoy a little country, bluegrass, gospel, and fellowship. - Pupil Progression Plan Available For Public Review
- The Claiborne Parish School Board will revise and adopt the Pupil Progression Plan at its regular meeting July 13, 2000. This plan sets local policy for promotion, retention, and testing of students in Claiborne Parish schools. Local residents may view the draft plan and make comments at the Claiborne Parish School Board office at 415 East Main during regular business hours.
- Sign Up Now For "Taste Of Homer" And Submit Recipe
- Individuals, businesses, restaurants, or churches interested in preparing a favorite dish for the "Taste Of Homer" on Saturday, November 11 during Homer's Sesquicentennial Celebration should sign up immediately and submit their recipe no later than June 30. A cookbook containing these recipes, along with historical information and pictures of historical sites in and around Homer, will be sold this fall. - Items Being Collected For Sesquicentennial Time Capsule
- Pam Suggs, Claiborne Parish Librarian, is seeking items for the time capsule to be buried as part of the Sesquicentennial Celebration in November. Materials should reflect the community as it is in the present year. Civic organizations, schools, churches, and other community groups are being asked to collect items they would like to submit for possible use in the capsule.
Any newspaper articles submitted will be photocopied on acid free paper because original articles deteriorate quickly and contribute to the deterioration of other items. Color photos are not stable, therefore any photographs submitted should be black and white. Computer disks and similar electronic media cannot be considered as they will not be playable in the future. Plastics cannot be used because of their aging characteristics, such as CD's or video tapes. Any group interested in making a contribution may call Suggs at the Claiborne Parish Public Library at 927-3845.

- Homer High Class Of 1990 To Hold 10-Year Reunion
- The Homer High Class of 1990 will hold their 10-year reunion beginning at 6 PM at the Linder Motor Lodge on Friday, July 28, followed by all-day events on Saturday, and will conclude Sunday, July 30, at St. John Baptist Church. Anyone interested in helping organize the reunion is asked to attend the meeting at 11 AM on July 8 at the Jaycee Park.

- Adult Education Classes at the Claiborne Vo-Tech School, F.A. "Red" Davis Campus, will be closed until July 5, 2000. - Please continue to recycle your newspapers by dropping them off at Homer City Hall (old fire station).
- Grief Support Group Meets 1st And 3rd Mondays

- Smoke Detectors For The Elderly Offered through TRIAD
- TRIAD of Claiborne wants all seniors age 65 and above, to have a smoke detector. You may also qualify if you're disabled. Having a smoke detector can mean the difference of life or death. Deadline for Advertisements and News Copy is Tuesday at 12 Noon. Weddings and Engagements must be turned in for publication on the Friday prior to the desired publication date.
