Town Raises Water And Sewer Rates

At the regular meeting of the Mayor and Homer Town Council Monday, June 5, the Council approved the Finance Committee's recommendation to raise water and sewer rates and city hall rental fees. On a motion by Scott Roberson and second by Patricia Jenkins, the Council, by a vote of 3 to 1, raised inside water rates from $1.45 to $1.80 and sewer rates from $1.90 to $2.15. Outside water rates were raised from $2.55 to $3.85 and sewer from $2.90 to $4.10. Keith Beard was the only vote against the motion. Ed Watson was absent. |
School Board Appoints Stevens New Principal At Summerfield

The Claiborne Parish School Board, in a called meeting Thursday, June 1, ratified the recommendation of Superintendent Gary Jones to hire Homer High principal D'Arcy Stevens as the new principal at Summerfield High School. The Board then voted to advertise for the principal opening at Homer High School. |

Summer Remediation Is Underway
Summertime is here! Pools are preparing to open. While most students are out of school, sleeping late, engaging in numerous summer activities, such as playing ball and going swimming, more than 150 fourth and eighth grade students in Claiborne Parish Schools are back in school. |

Harmon Pleads Not Guilty To Mail Fraud
On Thursday, June 1, Jeanette Harmon pled not guilty to eight counts of mail fraud in U. S. District Court in Shreveport and was released on a $25,000 unsecured bond. |

- Claiborne Council On Aging - Events for June 2000
- Sign Up Now For "Taste Of Homer" And Submit Recipe
- Individuals, businesses, restaurants, or churches interested in preparing a favorite dish for the "Taste Of Homer" on Saturday, November 11 during Homer's Sesquicentennial Celebration should sign up immediately and submit their recipe no later than June 30. A cookbook containing these recipes, along with historical information and pictures of historical sites in and around Homer, will be sold this fall. - Items Being Collected For Sesquicentennial Time Capsule
- Pam Suggs, Claiborne Parish Librarian, is seeking items for the time capsule to be buried as part of the Sesquicentennial Celebration in November. Materials should reflect the community as it is in the present year. Civic organizations, schools, churches, and other community groups are being asked to collect items they would like to submit for possible use in the capsule.
Any newspaper articles submitted will be photocopied on acid free paper because original articles deteriorate quickly and contribute to the deterioration of other items. Color photos are not stable, therefore any photographs submitted should be black and white. Computer disks and similar electronic media cannot be considered as they will not be playable in the future. Plastics cannot be used because of their aging characteristics, such as CD's or video tapes. Any group interested in making a contribution may call Suggs at the Claiborne Parish Public Library at 927-3845.
- Country, Bluegrass, Gospel Every Friday In Homer
- Every Friday night in downtown Homer, amateur musicians from all over the Ark-La-Tex meet at the Homer Fire Station to enjoy a little country, bluegrass, gospel, and fellowship. - Haynesville Woodson Reunion Talent Show Set For June 29
- The Haynesville Woodson Reunion Talent Show will be held Thursday, June 29 at 7 PM in the Haynesville High School auditorium.
- Homer High Class Of 1990 To Hold 10-Year Reunion
- The Homer High Class of 1990 will hold their 10-year reunion beginning at 6 PM at the Linder Motor Lodge on Friday, July 28, followed by all-day events on Saturday, and will conclude Sunday, July 30, at St. John Baptist Church. Anyone interested in helping organize the reunion is asked to attend the meeting at 11 AM on July 8 at the Jaycee Park.
- "Critters Among Us" Topic At Lake Claiborne State Park
- Learn more about the beneficial and harmful effects of insects on the environment. On Saturday, June 17, from 7-8 PM, the park naturalist at

- Driver's Ed Classes At Homer High Begin Monday, June 12
- Register now at the Claiborne Parish School Board for the 2000 Driver's Education Class at Homer High. Class instruction will be Mon., June 12 - Fri., June 16, beginning at 8 AM. Class size is limited. Registration fee is $150 payable by money order or cashier's check. Must be 15 years old by June 28, 2000 to register.
- Jim Hatch To Speak On Indian Cultures At State Park

Jim Hatch will educate visitors on how Lake Claiborne was utilized by American Indian cultures when he speaks on "Native Americans: The First Park Campers" at the Lake Claiborne State park on Saturday, June 24 from 7-8 PM. - Smoke Detectors For The Elderly Offered through TRIAD
- TRIAD of Claiborne wants all seniors age 65 and above, to have a smoke detector. You may also qualify if you're disabled. Having a smoke detector can mean the difference of life or death. - Outdoor Discovery Camp At Lake Claiborne State Park
- On Wednesday, June 10 from 7:30 AM - 4:30 PM children in grades five and
up are invited to participate in a special outdoor day camp. Activities will include a fishing clinic, trail hike, camping and outdoor survival tips, insect and aquatic life collection, swimming and more. Deadline for Advertisements and News Copy is Tuesday at 12 Noon. Weddings and Engagements must be turned in for publication on the Friday prior to the desired publication date.
