Remembering Memorial Day With A Tribute To Allan David King

Each year on Memorial Day, a wreath is placed beside the War Memorial on the Courthouse Square to "honor the brave men and women of Claiborne Parish who served in World War I, World War II, the Korean Conflict, the Vietnam War, and the Persian Gulf War." This year is no different, thanks to members of American Legion Auxiliary Unit 73 and American Legion Post No. 73. |
Town Makes Deal To Sell Watson Building To Larry Finks

In a Special Called Meeting Thursday, May 25, the Homer Town Council approved a request by the Homer Industrial Foundation to sell the Watson Building in the South Industrial Park to Larry Finks, owner of Superior Foods, for $87,000. Finks will pay $1,000 down and at the end of two years will be allowed to deduct $1,000 for each employee, up to 87, who work consecutively for a twelve month period over the next two years. |
Sheriff Asks Parish Voters To Support Tax Renewal

Twenty years ago citizens in Claiborne Parish voted to pass a tax to support Law Enforcement. In July 1990, Claiborne Parish citizens overwhelmingly passed a renewal of this tax by a vote of 1002 to 268. On Saturday, July 21, residents of Claiborne Parish will once again be given the opportunity to renew the property tax millage which provides necessary funds for deputy salaries and general operation of the Claiborne Parish Sheriff's Office. |

- Corney Lake Moss Problems To Be Discussed
- The U.S. Forest Service and concerned citizens will meet June 6 at Summerfield High School at 6:30 PM to discuss vegetation and other problem on Corney Lake. - Claiborne Detention Center Open House Friday, June 9 - Sheriff Kenneth Volentine invites parish residents to the Ribbon-Cutting Ceremony and Open House at the Claiborne Parish Detention Center located three miles east on Hwy. 520 (Colquitt Road) on Friday, June 9 from 2 - 5 PM.
- Country, Bluegrass, Gospel Every Friday In Homer
- Every Friday night in downtown Homer, amateur musicians from all over the Ark-La-Tex meet at the Homer Fire Station to enjoy a little country, bluegrass, gospel, and fellowship. - Calvary Baptist Church Youth To Sell BBQ Plates
- The Calvary Baptist Church Youth Group will be selling BBQ plates Saturday, June 10 from 9:30 AM - 1:30 PM at the Wal-Mart parking lot. Plates are $5 and will include chicken, baked beans, potato salad and desserts. Hamburger plates will also be sold.
- Adult Education Classes At Homer Vo-Tech Start July 5 - Adult Education Classes at the Claiborne Vo-Tech School, F.A. "Red" Davis Campus, will be closed until July 5, 2000. - Juneteenth Pageant Seeking Contestants

- Developed and maintained by The Claiborne Parish School Board, the Claiborne Parish School District Web Site will provide information on our School District, Central Office Staff, Parish Schools, Parent/Teacher Resources, a parish-wide Educator Email Directory, Area Technology Developements, and an Employment Opportunity Listing with an online application for employment in the Claiborne Parish School System.

- The complete Community Service Directory originally produced by The Family First Coalition will be presented online. Information covered includes: Educational Programs & Resources, Health & Medical Resources, Social & Community Programs, Clubs & Organizations, Related Internet Resources and much more. Portions are now online with completion expected by late June.

- Grief Support Group Meets 1st And 3rd Mondays

- Town Councils, Police Jury And School Board To Meet - The Homer Town Council will meet Monday, June 5 at 6 PM.
The Claiborne Parish Police Jury will meet at 10 AM Wednesday, June 7 and 10 AM Thursday, June 8.
The Claiborne Parish School Board will hold a "Special Called Meeting" on Thursday, June 1 at 6 PM to consider hiring a principal at Summerfield High School.
The School Board will hold their regular meeting on Thursday, June 8 at 7 PM, following the work session at 6 PM.
The Haynesville Town Council will meet Tuesday, June 13 at 6 PM.
- "Taste Of Homer" Needs Participants And Recipes By June 30
- Homer's Sesquicentennial Committee is compiling a cookbook containing recipes prepared for this year's "Taste Of Homer" planned for Saturday, November 11 in Homer City Hall. Parish historian Beverly Smith will provide highlights of Homer's 150-year-old history and some of the area's historical landmarks for the cookbook. Restaurants, businesses, churches, and individuals are encouraged to sign up to prepare their favorite recipes. Deadline to sign up and submit recipes is June 30. - Outdoor Discovery Camp At Lake Claiborne State Park
- On Wednesday, June 10 from 7:30 AM - 4:30 PM children in grades five and
up are invited to participate in a special outdoor day camp. Activities will include a fishing clinic, trail hike, camping and outdoor survival tips, insect and aquatic life collection, swimming and more. - Homer High Class Of 1990 To Hold 10-Year Reunion - The Homer High Class of 1990 will hold their 10-year reunion beginning at 6 PM at the Linder Motor Lodge on Friday, July 28, followed by all-day events on Saturday, and will conclude Sunday, July 30, at St. John Baptist Church. Anyone interested in helping organize the reunion is asked to attend the meeting at 11 AM on July 8 at the Jaycee Park.

- "Critters Among Us" Topic At Lake Claiborne State Park
- Learn more about the beneficial and harmful effects of insects on the environment. On Saturday, June 17, from 7-8 PM, the park naturalist at

- Driver's Ed Classes At Homer High Begin June 12
- Register now at the Claiborne Parish School Board for the 2000 Driver's Education Class at Homer High. Class instruction will be Mon., June 12 - Fri., June 16, beginning at 8 AM. Class size is limited. Registration fee is $150 payable by money order or cashier's check. Must be 15 years old by June 28, 2000 to register.
- Jim Hatch To Speak On Indian Cultures At State Park

Jim Hatch will educate visitors on how Lake Claiborne was utilized by American Indian cultures when he speaks on "Native Americans: The First Park Campers" at the Lake Claiborne State park on Saturday, June 24 from 7-8 PM. - TRIAD of Claiborne wants all seniors age 65 and above, to have a smoke detector. You may also qualify if you're disabled. Having a smoke detector can mean the difference of life or death.
