LEAP Scores In, Schools Prepare For Summer Remediation

Although Louisiana LEAP scores improved statewide, Claiborne Parish scores showed a decline. Claiborne Parish School Superintendent Gary Jones said comparing 2000 LEAP scores to scores in 1999 was like comparing this year's rainfall to last year's. These are not the same students. |
BFI To Assist Jury Cleaning Up Two Illegal Dump Sites

At the Wednesday May 10 workshop of the Claiborne Parish Police Jury, Kenneth Camp asked jurors for assistance cleaning up an area behind the Goodwin Lake dam. He said his family had recently received a mandate from the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development to clean up the area. |
School Board Approves Uniforms At Homer Schools
- Adopts New Transfer Policy

Claiborne Parish School Board members attended the joint band concert of Homer and Haynesville High School on Thursday, May 11. Following the concert, board members held their regular meeting in the Haynesville High auditorium. The agenda included a number of recognitions, adoption of a mandatory school uniform policy in Homer, and approval of a new hardship transfer policy. |

Graduation Exercises Planned At Claiborne Academy Tonight
Commencement exercises at Claiborne Academy will be tonight, Thursday May 18 beginning at 8 PM in the Claiborne Academy gymnasium, according to Dr. David Bass, principal. |

Haynesville High School Hosts Graduation Exercises May 16
Graduation exercises at Haynesville High School were held Tuesday night, May 16, at 7:30 PM at the Haynesville High School auditorium.

- ABC Head Start Graduation Transition Exercises May 18
- ABC Head Start graduation exercises will be held today, Thursday, May 18 at 6 PM in the Homer High School auditorium, according to Delma Marie Scott, Center Director.
- Central Claiborne Water System To Meet May 18
- The Central Claiborne Water System will hold its annual meeting at 6 PM on Thursday, May 18 at the Claiborne Parish Police Jury office. Robin Bridges, Webster Parish County Agent, will speak on the Sparta Aquifer. All members are encouraged to be present.
- Confederate Riding Club To Hold Annual Trail Ride
- The Confederate Riding Club will hold its annual trail ride and BBQ on Saturday, May 27 at Corney Lake beginning at 8:00 AM from the recreation area. Lunch will be served immediately following the ride which will last about five hours. - Fund Set Up For "Rebel" At First Woodlands Bank
- A fund has been set up at First Woodlands Bank in the name of "Rebel" to defray legal and other costs.

Portions are now online with completion expected by late May.

- Moms v.s. Moms Softball

Haynesville Recreational Association will be hosting a Moms v.s. Moms Softball Game, Saturday, May 27, 2000. Admission is $1 for 6 years of age and older. Hamburger plates will be available for lunch. Chances to win a Gas Grill and an 18 Speed Bicycle, to be awarded at the end of the ball season, will be offered at $1 each. - Fishing Derby Planned At Lake Claiborne State Park
- Beginners can learn the basic skills of fishing and fish identification from the park naturalist on Saturday, May
27 from 9 to 11 AM, as well as enter a rod and reel casting contest. Cane poles and fishing rods will be available

- Driver's Ed Classes At Homer High Begin June 12
- Register now at the Claiborne Parish School Board for the 2000 Driver's Education Class at Homer High. Class instruction will be Mon., June 12 - Fri., June 16, beginning at 8 AM. Class size is limited. Registration fee is $150 payable by money order or cashier's check. Must be 15 years old by June 28, 2000 to register.

- Smoke Detectors For The Elderly Offered through TRIAD
- TRIAD of Claiborne wants all seniors age 65 and above, to have a smoke detector. You may also qualify if
you're disabled. Having a smoke detector can mean the difference of life or death. Smoke detectors are available

Deadline for Advertisements and News Copy is Tuesday at 12 Noon. Weddings and Engagements must be turned in for publication on the Friday prior to the desired publication date. Photographs must be in the newspaper office by 4 p.m. Friday, a $10.00 charge is placed on all photographs. All "Letter to the Editor" must be signed.
