Rebel's Death Prompts Action Of Good Samaritan

What could be more appropriate during this Holy Week, than the story of a "Good Samaritan." Churches around the globe remember the tragic death of Jesus Christ almost 2,000 years ago, and on Easter Sunday will celebrate his resurrection.

Homer Native Fred Wideman Will Deliver The Message At The Memorial Day Service At Lisbon United Methodist Church On April 22 At 11 AM. Wideman Presently Serves As Pastor Of Trinity United Methodist Church In Ruston. In April 1849, the first Methodist Society was organized in the home of Thomas B. Wafer. Services were held under a brush arbor about one and a half miles east of Lisbon, across from the gasoline plant. Services were later held in a one room school building at the present site, using the light of coal oil lamps and heat from a fireplace. The congregation sat on benches with no backs.

Claiborne Puts Fallin Over The Top
Only 8,654 registed voters in three parishes showed up to cast their ballots Saturday, April 15 for the two candidates vying for the District Judge seat in Division C. Glen Fallin received 4,708 votes or 54.4 percent to Jonathan Stewart's 3,946 votes or 45.6 percent.

Area ministers met Wednesday, April 12 at Rocky Springs Baptist Church in Lisbon. Plans were discussed for the upcoming Community Sunrise Service and the National Day of Prayer.

  • Homer High Class Of 1990 To Plan 10-Year Reunion - Homer High School graduates of 1990 will meet Saturday, April 22 at 6 PM at Linder Motor Lodge to plan their 10-year class reunion.   • Census 2000 Is Still Taking Applications In Claiborne - Testing for Census 2000 in Haynesville at Town Hall on Mondays at 4 PM and at United Zion Baptist Church on Thursdays at 6 PM. In Homer, tests at City Hall on Tuesdays at 9 AM and 1 PM, and Thursdays at 2 PM. Bring two forms of ID, including Social Security card. Must be 18 or older.   • Peterson Cemetery Memorial Scheduled Saturday, April 29 - The Peterson Cemetery Memorial and Graveyard Workings will be held Saturday morning April 29, followed by a covered dish lunch at noon. At 10 AM, there will be a memorial service for Civil War veteran Thomas David Driver. Donations for cemetery upkeep can be sent to Odessa Roberts, 134 Willow St., Homer or brought to memorial. Come join us on this special day to honor our loved ones.
     
  • Kindergarten Round-Up At Athens, April 25 - 27 - Athens Kindergarten Round-Up will be held, April 25 - 27 from 9 AM to 12 Noon. Parents should bring official birth certificates, up-to-date health card, and child's Social Security card. Children do not need to attend. Children born before September 30, 1995 are eligible for 4-year-old class and those born before September 30, 1994 are eligible for 5-year-old class.

  • Registration Set For Pineview's Pre-School Program - Registration for the 2000-2001 Preschool Program session has been set for the week of May 7-10 during normal school hours. Please bring the following items with you when you register your child, 1) birth certificate with state seal, 2) updated health card, and 3) Social Security card. A child must be four years of age on or before September 2000 to enroll.
     
  • Homer Elementary Preschool Registration May 1, 2 - Homer Elementary Preschool Registration will be held Monday and Tuesday, May 1 and 2 from 8:30 AM to 2:30 PM. A child must be four years old before September 30, 2000. Parents must bring child's birth certificate, Social Security card, and white health card. Both prechools--Starting Points Preschool Program and Title I Preschool Program--are limited to 20 students and require registration and testing. Starting Points requires parents provide proof of employment or enrollment in an institution of learning at least 20 hours a week and they must meet a monthly income scale. There is no requirement for Title I.

Parents must also bring the child's birth certificate, Social Security card, and an up-to-date health card which indicates the child has received all requirements including Hepatitis B vaccine.

Must be 15 years old by June 28, 2000 to register.
