LEAP 21 Tests Taken This Week Will Impact
More Than Students

Students in 4th and 8th grade at Claiborne Parish public schools are taking LEAP 21 tests this week, March 13-17. For the first time, as part of the Louisiana education reform initiative, students who fail the LEAP test will not be promoted to the next grade.

Police Jury Revokes Permit At Club Adrian

At the regular meeting of the Claiborne Parish Police Jury Thursday March 9, jurors revoked the permit issued to the Club Adrian (formerly Cherry Hill) as requested by the District Attorney, Sheriff's Office and the Office of Alcohol Beverage Control. Club owner Robert Barber spoke at the public hearing held prior to the workshop on Wednesday and admitted he had been lax enforcing the 2 AM closing and had knowingly violated his permit by occasionally selling alcohol at the Club.

School Board Gets Lesson On Using Internet To Improve Instruction

Prior to the regular meeting of the Claiborne Parish School Board on Thursday, March 9, Superintendent Gary Jones and school board members attended a workshop entitled "Using the Internet to Improve Instruction" at the new 30-station computer lab at Homer Elementary.

Former Haynesville Police Officer Pleads Guilty To Theft

Former Haynesville Police Officer Frankie Lane Ford, who was arrested February 7, 1999 by the Louisiana State Police and charged with theft over $500 and malfeasance in office, pled guilty in criminal court on February 9, 2000.

Two Men Injured In Alcohol-Related Accident

Eugene Carpenter, 56, of Haynesville remains hospitalized in serious condition, following an accident on Louisiana Hwy. 540 just west of Homer Friday, March 10. Louisiana State Police Troop G in Bossier City said the accident was alcohol related and charges are pending against Carpenter.

Individuals may purchase one of 200 numbered blocks for $50. If the Relay cow drops a "Patty" on your block, you win 50% of total ticket sales. Teams are needed to make and sell concessions that day.   • Homer Fire Department To Sell Portraits For Fund-raiser - Fire Chief Dennis Butcher said a representative for the Homer Fire Department will begin contacting residents about purchasing a portrait beginning March 23. Butcher said this is an annual fund-raiser and the Fire Department appreciates the support the community has shown in the past and hopes they will continue to do so.   • Grief Support Group Meets 1st And 3rd Mondays At Hospital - The Grief Support Group meets every 1st and 3rd Monday at 6 PM at the Homer Memorial Hospital Conference Room.   • Relay For Life Remembers And Honors Cancer Patients - At 9 PM Friday, April 7 a special candle lighting ceremony will be held to remember persons who have been affected by cancer during the American Cancer Society's Relay For Life to be held at the Homer High School Track from 6 PM - 6 AM. Luminaries purchased for $10 to honor or memorialize a cancer patient will be lighted and placed around the perimeter of the track.   • CLED Participants To Meet Tuesday, March 21 At 7 PM - All CLED participants will meet Tuesday, March 21 at Homer City Hall at 7 PM for an ongoing discussion of the area's four top priorities agreed upon during the ten week seminar held between September and November of 1999. Participants who attended an open forum on October 26 identified a number of critical issues they felt needed to be addressed in our parish. The top four priority needs were 1) improve the educational school system, 2) drugs, 3) more and better jobs, and 4) improving community leadership. Tourism tied with number four but was addressed under the jobs category.
