Winter Storm Drops Freezing Rain And Snow In Parish

Claiborne Electric and Entergy Crews Worked Through The Weekend Restoring Power To Approximately 6500 Claiborne Parish Residents Left Without Electricity After A Winter Storm Moved Through The Area January 27 And 28 Dropping 1.68 Inches Of Freezing Rain and Snow On Trees And Roadways. Last Wednesday evening, Claiborne Parish students were thrilled to hear news reports schools would be closed. Claiborne was the first of seven Northwest Louisiana parishes to announce schools would close Thursday, January 27 due to the winter storm moving into the area.

Fred Campbell shared three of his six laws of success at the Homer Chamber of Commerce banquet Monday, January 31. Campbell said Webster defines success as "the attainment of wealth, favor or imminence." He said wealth could mean success but not necessarily.

  • Parish Boards And Town Councils Meet In February - The Homer Town Council meets 6 PM Mon. February 7. The Haynesville Town Council meets 6 PM Tuesday, February 8. The Claiborne Parish Police Jury will meet 10 AM Tuesday, February 9 and Wednesday, February 10.
        The Claiborne Parish School Board will meet at 7 PM Thursday, February 10 following the work session at 6 PM.
     
  • Boy Scouts Reschedule Community Food Drive - Due to weather conditions, the Boy Scout Troop 72 Food Drive scheduled for Boy Scouts of AmericaJan. 29 was postponed. Cub Scouts delivered bags Jan. 22. If you did not receive a bag, a grocery bag may be used. Boy Scouts will pick up bags Saturday Feb. 5 starting at 9 AM to replenish the local Community Food Bank. Wayne Hatfield said the community's help is greatly appreciated. For more info call him at 927-2961.
     
  • Ultimate Wrestling Alliance Comes To Haynesville High - The UWA will be in Haynesville Saturday, Feb. 5 at 7:30 PM. Tickets are $10 and can be purchased from Big "A" Auto Parts, Killgore Pharmacy, Haynesville High and Jr. High. Funds raised will benefit Haynesville High Basketball. Wrestlers will be at Homer Wal-Mart 6-8 PM Friday, Feb. 4 for photos and autographs.
     
  • St. Jude Benefit Concert Scheduled Saturday, Feb. 26 - St. Jude Children's Research Hospital Benefit Concert featuring bluegrass, country, and gospel will be held at the Homer High School auditorium on Saturday February 26 at 6:30 PM. Admission is $5. Other contributions will be appreciated.
     
  • Claiborne Academy Selling Yearbooks Jan. 31 to Feb. 18 - Claiborne Academy yearbooks will be on sale January 31 to February 18 for $30 in the office, from elementary teachers, or Mrs. Burns. This year students can personalize their yearbook. For more information, contact a member of the journalism staff.
     
  • Pineview PTSA Sponsors Valentine's Ball Feb. 14 - Pineview PTSA is sponsoring a semi-formal Valentine's Ball at Pineview High School for 5th through 12th grade students Mon., Feb. 14 from 7-11 PM. Admission is $2 per person, $3 couples. Security and chaperones will be provided.
     
  • Black Heritage Celebration Planned Saturday Feb. 19 - The production "Because I Too Sing America" is scheduled for Sat., Feb. 19 at 7 PM at Homer City Hall.   • EPA Water Regulations, Land Use Control Threatens Rights - A special meeting has been called for Monday, February 21 at 6 PM in the West Monroe Civic Center at 901 Ridge Avenue, West Monroe. The EPA is proposing to further expand its regulatory authority to include agricultural and forestry operation through federally approved Total Maximum Daily Load (TMDL) implementation programs, presenting a major threat to private landowners, no matter how big or small. If you are interested in uniting with national agricultural and forestry organization to fight these rule changes, you should attend this important meeting.   • "Miniature Wonders Nature Walk" At Lake Claiborne - Learn about the small and easily overlooked plant, animal and insect life at Lake Claiborne State Park. The Nature Walk will take place on Saturday, March 4 from 9 to 10 AM and participants will have the opportunity to view them up close through hand held lenses.   • Lake Claiborne To Host "Attracting Hummingbirds" March 11 - On Saturday March 11 from 7-8 PM, the park naturalist at Lake Claiborne State Park will teach visitors how to identify and attract hummingbirds.   • Homer High Basketball This Week - Friday, February 4 - Pels play Lakeview here. Game time 6 PM. Friday, February 11 - Pels play their last regular season against Sibley there. Game time is 6 PM.
     
  • Athens High School To Hold Book Fair February 1-8 - Athens will have a Scholastic Book Fair February 1 through 7 from noon until 3 PM. Admission is free and open to everyone. For more information call 258-3241. The Book Fair will also be open during Family Literacy Night on Thursday, February 3 beginning at 5:30 PM.
     
  • CPSB Special Education To Destroy Old Records - Claiborne Parish Special Services (Special Education) will destroy records of students who graduated prior to 1990 and received special education services. Any parent, guardian, or student (must be 18 years old) can claim records by presenting a picture I.D. at the Special Ed office at 500 North 3rd no later than February 18, 2000.
     
  • D.A.R.T. In Homer Every Thursday From 9-12 AM - D.A.R.T. of Lincoln is committed to ending domestic violence by providing shelter, legal assistance and counseling.   • Hospitality Training Planned For February 17 At City Hall - In order to better prepare our community for the increasing tourism in our state and in Claiborne Parish, the Homer Chamber of Commerce, Haynesville Chamber of Commerce, and the LSU AgCenter will offer a one-day seminar entitled "Hospitality Training." The seminar will be held Thursday, February 17, 2000 at Homer City Hall from 10 AM to 2 PM. The goal of the seminar is to train front line people, those people that tourists come in contact with first--to improve their skills and educate them on the importance of tourism to the local economy.
        Business owners are encouraged to enroll their employees and encouraged to send as many employees as they wish. Cost of the seminar is $5 and includes lunch. Deadline to sign up is Friday, February 11. Checks should be made payable to Homer Chamber of Commerce. For more information or to obtain a registration form, call Dora Ann Hatch at 927-3110.
     
  • Claiborne Council On Aging To Host Free Health Screening - The Claiborne Council On Aging and Springhill Medical Center will hold a free health screening on Thursday, February 17 from 10-11 AM at the Senior Center qt 608 East 4th Street in Homer.   • Council On Aging To Offer 55/Alive Mature Driving Course - The Claiborne Council on Aging and AARP will offer a 55/Alive Mature Driving Course on February 23 and 24 from 12:30 PM until 4:30 PM at the Claiborne Senior Center at 608 East 4th Street. The fee for the course is $10 and the last day to register is February 17. Some insurance companies may provide a discount to graduates of the course.   • American Cancer Society Kicks Off "Relay For Life" - The Claiborne Parish Chapter of the American Cancer Society met recently to kick off the Annual Spring Relay for Life. The fund-raiser is tentatively scheduled for April 7, 2000. Anyone may organize a team for the relay. You do not have to be affiliated with a health care organization or have had a personal experience with cancer. Just be interested in helping raise money for the American Cancer Society and willing to have a great time! For more information, call Gaye Brunson at 927-2024.
     
  • Not All Louisiana Taxpayers Will Receive Tax Booklets - Louisiana taxpayers who have used alternative methods to file their income tax returns for the past two years will not receive a pre-addressed state income tax booklet. Unaddressed booklets are available at libraries, regional offices and from the IRS, or by calling toll-free (888) 829-3071. Taxpayers may also download an individual income tax return form from the State's Internet web page at www.rev.state.la.us.
     
  • Girl Scouts To Take Cookie Orders Jan. 28 to Feb. 12 - Troup GirlScouts.org344 Brownie and Junior Girl Scouts of Homer will be taking orders for girl scout cookies from January 28 to February 12!! Cookies are $3 per box and will be delivered beginning in March. Support your local scout troop.   • Local Musicians Meet Friday Nights At Fire Station - Local musicians are still "pickin' and grinnin" Friday nights in Homer. From 6 PM till, you will find them "picking and grinning" from country to bluegrass to gospel at the Homer Fire Station on West Main. Everyone is welcome!!
     
  • Homer Memorial Hospital To Hold Childbirth Classes - Homer Memorial HospitalHomer Memorial Hospital is offering "Childbirth Preparation Classes" beginning January 11. Classes are free and are open to anyone wishing to attend, regardless of where they plan to deliver.
