James McClung Named "Acting" Administrator
At Homer Memorial

Town Council Ratifies Board's Decision

Hospital Board Member Stuart Butler stated, "One good reason for choosing James McClung over the first choice--he may be the best man for this job at this time." Lawson Wilder said, "He is more qualified to make reductions at the operating level than anybody we could pick." James McClung was selected at a special called meeting of the Board of Directors of the Homer Memorial Hospital on December 8 as the next "acting" hospital administrator, effective January 1, 2000. At that time, he will replace Larry Jordan who was asked by the Board to take extended leave, with full salary. until his retirement date in April of 2000.

Claiborne Parish School District Receives Funds
Totaling $641,235

The Claiborne Parish School Board met Thursday, December 9 to consider one student request and to hear a report from Janet Holland on various funding and grants received totaling $641,245 and how the funds were being used.

Police Juror Roy Mardis Expressed His Appreciation To Outgoing Police Jury President Ed Foster For All His Help And Support. Other Jury Members Concurred. Foster Did Not Seek Re-Election After Serving For Twelve Years On The Claiborne Parish Police Jury. On Wednesday, December 8 the Claiborne Parish Police Jury held a public hearing to allow comments on the proposed 2000 budget, then discussed the December 9 agenda items--bid openings for the jail roof, a water well in Ward 9, and oil and gasoline for 2000. Jurors were presented a resolution from the Homer Chamber of Commerce encouraging the preservation of Homer's Historic District.

Council Approves Administrator, Waits To
Appoint New Hospital Board

In a special called meeting of the Homer Town Council, Ed Watson's motion, seconded by Joe Merritt, was unanimously approved to accept the recommendation of the Board of Directors of the Homer Memorial Hospital to appoint James McClung as "acting" administrator of the hospital.

  • Christmas Musical, Dinner First Baptist In Haynesville - The First Baptist Church of Haynesville will be present a Christmas musical comedy "Twas the Last Mailing Day Before Christmas" on Saturday, December 18 at Haynesville Fair Barn. Reservations required for dinner at 6 PM. Play at 6:45 PM. Suggested donation of $5. Call the church at 624-0214 to make reservations for the dinner.
     
  • The "Spirit Of Christmas Food Drive" Ends Dec. 22 - Local residents are reminded only one week remains to donate toward the "Spirit of Christmas Food Drive." Brookshire's is accepting non-perishable foods to help the 9700 families in Texas, Louisiana, and Arkansas targeted to receive assistance this year--families who would otherwise not have enough to eat during the holiday season. All food collected at the Homer Brookshire's will be delivered to families in this area before Christmas, with the help local Boy Scouts.
     
  • Homer Drama Club Presents Christmas Play December 16 - The Homer High School Drama Club will present two Christmas one-act plays at the Homer High auditorium on Thursday, Dec. 16 at 7 PM. The two one-act plays are entitled "Muggsy's Merry Christmas" and "Hillbilly Christmas Carol." Admission is $1.
        Plays are also scheduled for February and May of 2000, however the Drama Club needs sound and lighting equipment, stage props, scenery materials, furniture, and costumes. Anyone interested in contributing should contact drama instructor Keith Beard at 927-2985.
     
  • Claiborne Academy Presents Musical December 16 - Elementary students at Claiborne Academy will share the gospel of Jesus Christ through song in the musical entitled "Code Red" on Thursday, December 16 at 7 PM in the school gymnasium. The kindergarten class will sing Christmas carols. Everyone is invited and the admission is free.
     
  • Haynesville/Woodson Holds Annual Christmas Dance - The Haynesville/Woodson Alumni's Annual Christmas Dance will be Saturday, December 25 at the Haynesville Fair Building from 9 PM to 1 AM. Advance tickets $7 and $8 at the door. Please see Don Trimble, Dewatha Malone, or Wilbert Williams for tickets.
     
  • Ribbon Cutting At New WIC Store Mon. Dec. 20, 10 AM - The public is invited to attend the ribbon cutting at the Rockett Nutritional Services, WIC Store at 635C West Main (next to McKenzie Bros. Garage on West Main) at 10 AM on Monday, Dec. 20. The Homer Chamber of Commerce Welcomes this new member.
     
  • Homer High Basketball This Week -     The Pelican Boys and Girls Basketball Teams will travel to Minden for the Minden Tournament December 15-18.
    On Monday, December 20, the Pelicans will travel to El Dorado.
        On Tuesday, December 21, the Pelicans will travel to Loyola for their second district game. Game time is 6 PM.
     
  • Legion Auxiliary Needs Help Gathering Items For Veterans - The American Legion Auxiliary Unit 73 needs your help gathering items for Veterans this Christmas. Items being collected include hygiene items such as toothbrushes, toothpaste, deodorant, mouthwash, combs, razors, shaving cream, etc. and entertainment items such as dominos, playing cards, games, books, and magazines.
        Money donations are also being accepted to purchase these items. Donations can be taken to the General Discount Store at 607 East Main in Homer located behind Gray's Jewelry. For more information, call Carol Jones at 927-3549 or 927-3590.
     
  • Cross Disability Support Group To Meet At Noon December 15 - The Cross Disability Support Group will meet at 12 noon the third Wednesday of each month at the Claiborne Council on Aging at 608 East 4th, Homer, Louisiana. The Group is open to all ages of people with disabilities, diabetes, stroke, Alzheimer's, heart disease, etc. as well as survivors, friends, caregivers, family members and the general public.

  • Corrections Sought For Veterans Listed At Homer High School - In the December 2 issue, page 5, The Guardian-Journal printed the actual list of names on the plaques at Homer High School of former Homer High School students or faculty who served in World War II. If you know of someone whose name is missing from the list, please call Susan Herring at 927-3541.
     
  • Grief Group Meets Tuesday, December 21 At Homer Hospital - Northwest Regional Hospice and Homer Memorial Hospital continue to hold the grief group meeting every other Tuesday evening at 6:00 PM in the Conference Room of the hospital.   • Fire District 6 "Christmas At The Fire Station" December 18 - On Saturday, December 18, Santa Claus will travel to ten parish fire stations to visit with children, who will also be given rides on the fire trucks.   • List Of Voters On Inactive File Published In Today's Paper - Patricia Sanders, Claiborne Parish Registrar of Voters, would like to ask voters listed on the inactive file published in today's paper to contact her at their earliest convenience, in order to avoid having their name removed from the voting roll.   • Gibsland Bank & Trust To Honor JoAnn Rhodes At Open House Dec. 17 - Gibsland Bank and Trust announces the retirement of JoAnn Rhodes on Dec. 31, 1999, after 25 years of service, according to President J.R. Johnson. Rhodes Gibsland Bank and Trustjoined the bank in November 1974, was promoted to assistant cashier in 1979, to cashier in 1982, to Vice-President in 1997 and was relocated as Branch Manager in Athens in July of 1997.

  • NOTICE TO HUNTERS: Workers On Mid-Valley Pipeline - Mid-Valley Pipeline will be doing work on the Mid-Valley Pipeline right-of-way beginning Monday, December 6 through Friday, December 17. This work will take place on the pipeline right-of-way in the following counties and parishes: Gregg, Harrison, Caddo, Bossier, Webster, Claiborne, Union, Morehouse, West Carroll and East Carroll. Workers will be using ATV's and company trucks to accomplish this work along the right-of-way and will be wearing hunter orange.

  • Congressman Jim McCrery Staff Will Be In Parish December 22 - Staff members of Congressman Jim McCrery are scheduled to provide outreach services for local constituents on Wednesday, December 22. Representatives will be at the Homer City Council Chambers at 420 East Main at 9:30 AM and at Haynesville City Hall at 1:30 PM. They will assist constituents with federal issues and casework such as Social Security or veterans benefits and federal grant applications.
