"Christmas In Historic Homer"
Set For Saturday, December 11

The Seventh Annual Christmas Festival will begin at 10:30 AM Saturday, December 11 on the Claiborne Parish Courthouse Square in Historic Homer. Craft and food booths will open at 10:30 AM. All day entertainment will begin at 11 AM.

Council Reduces Number On Hospital Board, Votes To Save Historic District

The Town Council Adopted A Resolution To Support Working Jointly With The American Legion Post #73 And The Claiborne Council On Aging To Secure Funds To Renovate The American Legion Hut. Prior to the regular meeting of the Homer Town Council Monday, December 6, Mayor David Aubrey met with council members at a Special Called Meeting to discuss the composition of the Board of Directors of the Homer Memorial Hospital.

Hospital Board Gives Larry Jordan Twenty Days To Make List Of Cuts

On November 23, The Homer Memorial Hospital Board Voted To Give Administrator Larry Jordan Twenty Days To Make A List Of Additional Cuts For The Hospital, But Refused To Approve The Specified Amount Of $600,000 As Requested By Board Member Lawson Wilder The Ad Hoc Committee, appointed by the Homer Memorial Hospital Board to find ways to reduce expenditures and increase income for the hospital without lowering the high standard of patient care, made their final report to the Executive Committee on November 23 at 11 AM. Ad Hoc Committee members are Chairman Stuart Butler, Dr. Sam Abshire, Glenn Bays, and Lawson Wilder.

The Last L&NW Railroad Caboose To Become Official "Welcome Center"

According to an article in Claiborne Parish Sketches 1956, Rosa W. Blackman remembers "The Doodle" which was the name given to the Louisiana and Northwest Railroad (L&NW) in 1890, just after the L&NW purchased the Louisiana North and South Railroad (LN&S).

  • Christmas Festival, Parade Set For Saturday, Dec. 11 - The Town of Homer will hold its annual Christmas Festival and Parade on Saturday, December 11 beginning at 10:30 AM with food and craft booths, entertainment from 11 PM till 5 PM, pony rides and more.
        The Christmas Parade will begin at 3 PM featuring Grand Marshall Senator Randy Ewing and the Grambling State University Marching Band.
     
  • Homer Elementary Presents "Santa And Three Stooges" - The firm of "Scrooge, Scrooge and Scrooge" acquires the property known as the North Pole and decides that Santa is old and useless, must be fired or retired, given a gold watch and the North Pole toy shop is closed down. Come join us and find out if Santa is too old to deliver presents to children all around the world!
        Date: Thursday, December 9 at 6:30 PM. Admission $1.
     
  • Christmas Musical, Dinner First Baptist In Haynesville - The First Baptist Church of Haynesville will be present a Christmas musical comedy "Twas the Last Mailing Day Before Christmas" on Saturday, December 18 at Haynesville Fair Barn. Reservations required for dinner at 6 PM. Play at 6:45 PM. Suggested donation of $5. Call the church at 624-0214 to make reservations for the dinner.
     
  • Homer Drama Club Presents Christmas Play December 16 - The Homer High School Drama Club will present two Christmas one-act plays at the Homer High auditorium on Thursday, Dec. 16 at 7 PM. The two one-act plays are entitled "Muggsy's Merry Christmas" and "Hillbilly Christmas Carol." Admission is $1.
        Plays are also scheduled for February and May of 2000, however the Drama Club needs sound and lighting equipment, stage props, scenery materials, furniture, and costumes. Anyone interested in contributing should contact drama instructor Keith Beard at 927-2985.
     
  • Homer High Basketball This Week - December 9-11 - Pelicans will play in the Athens Tournament.
        Tuesday, December 14 - Pelicans play Springhill here in first district game at 6 PM.
        Pels will travel to Minden for the Minden Tournament December 15-18.

  • Charles Strong To Speak At Lions Club December 9 - Charles Strong, Director of the Northwest Louisiana Technical College in Webster and Claiborne Parishes will be the guest speaker at the Homer Lions Club meeting today, Thursday, December 9 at noon at Linder Motor Lodge.
     
  • Homer Lions Club Selling Pecans For Charity - The Homer Lions Club is having its annual pecan sales which will benefit several charities, including Louisiana Eye Foundation, Louisiana Eye Bank and Handicapped Children.

  • 4-H Plans Alumni Reunion In Baton Rouge In Year 2000 - The Louisiana 4-H Foundation has planned a 4-H Alumni Reunion to be held in Baton Rouge during National 4-H Week in the year 2000.   • Town Of Homer Tax Notices In The Mail - Tax notices for property owners in the Town of Homer were mailed last week. Residents have until December 31, 1999 to avoid penalties. For more information, call the Business Office at 927-3555.
     
  • NOTICE TO HUNTERS: Workers On Mid-Valley Pipeline - Mid-Valley Pipeline will be doing work on the Mid-Valley Pipeline right-of-way beginning Monday, December 6 through Friday, December 17. This work will take place on the pipeline right-of-way in the following counties and parishes: Gregg, Harrison, Caddo, Bossier, Webster, Claiborne, Union, Morehouse, West Carroll and East Carroll. Workers will be using ATV's and company trucks to accomplish this work along the right-of-way and will be wearing hunter orange.

  • Legion Auxiliary Needs Help Gathering Items For Veterans - The American Legion Auxiliary Unit 73 needs your help gathering items for Veterans this Christmas. Items being collected include hygiene items such as toothbrushes, toothpaste, deodorant, mouthwash, combs, razors, shaving cream, etc. and entertainment items such as dominos, playing cards, games, books, and magazines. Money donations are also being accepted to purchase these items. Donations can be taken to the General Discount Store at 607 East Main in Homer located behind Gray's Jewelry.   • Congressman Jim McCrery Staff Will Be In Parish December 22 - Staff members of Congressman Jim McCrery are scheduled to provide outreach services for local constituents on Wednesday, December 22. Representatives will be at the Homer City Council Chambers at 420 East Main at 9:30 AM and at Haynesville City Hall at 1:30 PM. They will assist constituents with federal issues and casework such as Social Security or veterans benefits and federal grant applications.   • D.A.R.T. Will Be In Homer Thursdays 9-12 AM - "Peace On Earth" begins at home. The Domestic Abuse Resistance Team (D.A.R.T.) of Lincoln can help. We are committed to ending domestic violence by providing services such as shelter, legal assistance and counseling. A representative of D.A.R.T. will be in Homer every Thursday from 9 AM to 12 PM.
