Thanksgiving--A Time For Families, For Feasting, And For Giving Thanks
Thanksgiving Is Celebrated This Week With Families Through Feasting, Through Prayer, And Through Various Local Church Services, Such As The Community Thanksgiving Service Held Sunday, November 21. The Thanksgiving Community Service Will Be Broadcast On The Word Channel, Local Cable Channel 37, At 10 AM and 8 PM From Saturday, November 27 To Friday, December 3.

Three hundred seventy-eight years ago sometime between September 21 and November 11, the Plymouth colonists and the Wampanoag Indians shared an autumn feast. The feast did not consist of turkey and dressing and pumpkin pie, but rather venison and wild fowl and no desserts.

The State of Louisiana's new School and District Accountability System with its "high stakes testing" is creating somewhat of a nightmare for districts across the state. School Superintendent Gary Jones and his staff have worked through lunch on several occasions trying to identify the impact the testing will have on Claiborne Parish schools.

Haynesville Council Opens Fire Truck Bids, Applies For LCDBG Funds
Haynesville Water Customers, Who Cut Their Water Back On After Being Cut Off By The Town, Will Be Charged A $50 Penalty. If The Lock Is Cut Or Removed Customers Will Have To Pay An Additional $12, Plus Payment For All Penalties And Past Due Bills In Full, Before Water Service Is Restored.

At the regular meeting of the Haynesville Town Council on November 9 with Mayor Pro Tem H.U. Slaid presiding, the Council opened two bids for a new fire truck. On motion by Alvin Kendrick, second by Joyce Major, the Council voted 4 to 0 to take bids under advisement. Absent for the meeting were Mayor Tom Crocker and Councilman Kenny Killgore.

About 1400 Registered Voters In Claiborne Parish Go To Polls

Of the 9,688 registered voters in Claiborne Parish, only about fourteen per cent took the time to go to the polls Saturday, November 20 to cast their ballots.

  • The American Legion and Auxiliary To Meet November 29 At Library - The American Legion Post 73 and the American Legion Auxiliary Unit 73 will meet Monday, November 29 at the Claiborne Parish Library on Edgewood Drive.
        The American Legion Auxiliary will meet at 5:30 PM. The American Legion will meet immediately following at 7 PM.
        All members are encouraged to attend as well as persons interested in joining.
     
  • D.A.R.T. Will Be In Homer Thursdays 9-12 AM - "Peace On Earth" begins at home. The Domestic Abuse Resistance Team (D.A.R.T.) of Lincoln can help. We are committed to ending domestic violence by providing services such as shelter, legal assistance and counseling. A representative of D.A.R.T. will be in Homer every Thursday from 9 AM to 12 PM.   • Wade Correctional Arts And Crafts Festival Is December 4 and 5 - On Saturday, December 4 and Sunday, December 5, David Wade Correctional Center will present its Semi-Annual Arts and Crafts Festival.

  • Haynesville To Travel To Kentwood Friday, November 26 - Haynesville (11-1) defeated the St. John Eagles last Friday by a score of 27-0. The Tornado will travel to Kentwood (9-2) Friday, November 26 for the third round of the playoffs.
     
  • Christmas Festival, Parade Set For Saturday, December 11 - The Town of Homer will hold its annual Christmas Festival and Parade on Saturday, December 11 beginning at 10 AM. Plenty of food and entertainment all day.
        Crafts will be sold around the square. Anyone interested in a craft booth or to enter the parade which will begin at 3 PM, please contact Mac Brakefield at the Homer Chamber of Commerce at 927-3271.
     
  • Homer Elementary Presents "Santa And Three Stooges" - The firm of "Scrooge, Scrooge and Scrooge" acquires the property known as the North Pole and decides that Santa is old and useless, must be fired or retired, given a gold watch and the North Pole toy shop is closed down. Come join us and find out if Santa is too old to deliver presents to children all around the world!

  • Schedule of Events For Claiborne Council On Aging - The Claiborne Council On Aging will close November 25 and 26 for Thanksgiving.
     
  • Homer Lions Club Selling Pecans For Charity - The Homer Lions Club is having its annual pecan sales which will benefit several charities, including Louisiana Eye Foundation, Louisiana Eye Bank and Handicapped Children.

  • Rangers Seeking Comments On Planned Burns1 - The Caney Ranger District of the Kisatchie National Forest is proposing to prescribe burn approximately 10,633 acres of National Forest land in Webster and Claiborne Parish between December 1999 and April 2000.   • NOTICE TO HUNTERS: Workers On Mid-Valley Pipeline - Mid-Valley Pipeline will be doing work on the Mid-Valley Pipeline right-of-way beginning Monday, December 6 through Friday, December 17. This work will take place on the pipeline right-of-way in the following counties and parishes: Gregg, Harrison, Caddo, Bossier, Webster, Claiborne, Union, Morehouse, West Carroll and East Carroll. Workers will be using ATV's and company trucks to accomplish this work along the right-of-way and will be wearing hunter orange.

  • Town Of Homer Offices To Close For Thanksgiving - The Town of Homer Mayor's Office and Business Office will close Thursday, Nov. 25 and Friday, Nov. 26 in observance of the Thanksgiving holiday. They will re-open on Monday, November 29.
     
  • Legion Auxiliary Needs Help Gathering Items For Veterans - The American Legion Auxiliary Unit 73 needs your help gathering items for Veterans this Christmas. Items being collected include hygiene items such as toothbrushes, toothpaste, deodorant, mouthwash, combs, razors, shaving cream, etc. and entertainment items such as dominos, playing cards, games, books, and magazines. Money donations are also being accepted to purchase these items. Donations can be taken to the General Discount Store at 607 East Main in Homer located behind Gray's Jewelry.
